Krishna is believed to be the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu as per Hindu mythology. The stories of Krishna's childhood and youth tell of his mischievous pranks as Makhan Chor (butter thief), his foiling of attempts to take his life, and his role as a protector of the people of Vrindavana. In this painting is depicted as a young boy playing flute as in the “Bhagavati Purana”. In this form, he is standing with one leg bent in front of the other and raises a flute to his lips.
