Jamini Roy

Artist Overview

Hailing from a small village, Jamini began his career by painting in the post-impressionist genre of landscapes and portraits. He started working on woven mats, cloth and wood coated with lime, for which inspiration came from textures of Byzantine art. He combined his working style with elements of tribal art from Bengal and his works in the Bengali folk painting marked a new beginning in the history of modern art. He was honored with Padma Bhushan in 1955 and died in Kolkata in 1972.
