Illustrious painter Jamini Roy has contributed immeasurably to the advent of modern art in India. Being the most famous pupil of Abanindranath Tagore, his achievements in the field of fine arts have set a benchmark for present day artists. Jamini Roy’s artworks still continue to enchant art enthusiasts the world over.

He was born in the year 1887 on 11th April at Beliatore, a village in Bankura district of West Bengal, India. (Jamini Roy passed away on 24th April 1972.)

His family was moderately prosperous and managed to provide him with all the basic amenities. At the age of sixteen, Roy got enrolled into Government College of Art, Kolkata. At that time, acclaimed artist Abanindranath Tagore, was the founder-come-vice principal of the institution. Under his guidance, Jamini picked up a brand new painting style. This style prevailed academic tradition for he started drawing classical nudes.

Awards and Accolades

Jamini Roy was a Padma Bhushan awarded; he received the State Award in this category in the year 1955. He was also elected as a fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in the year 1956.
